Private boat trip from Split, with your own skipper.
Where the Blue Cave is
The Blue Cave sits on the east side of Biševo, in a cove called Balun, about 4.5 nautical miles from Komiža on Vis (Komiža Tourist Board). From Split that means crossing past Šolta and out to Vis, so this is a trip for a proper speedboat, not a small RIB.
How you get inside
The opening is tiny, about 1.5 m high and 2.4 m wide, so visitors go in on small local boats (Komiža Tourist Board). Your skipper drops you at the cave, you buy a ticket, and you ride in on one of the cave boats. The blue glow comes from sunlight getting in through an opening under the water, so timing matters. The tourist board puts the best light at roughly 10 am to 2 pm.
Check the current ticket price on the Komiža Tourist Board page before you go. It changes between seasons.
A typical day
- Early start in Split. The earlier you leave, the shorter the queue at the cave.
- Blue Cave. Timed for the best light, around late morning.
- Stiniva. A cove on the south side of Vis, closed off by cliffs with a gap about 16 feet wide (CNN Travel). Big boats can't get in, so you swim or take a small boat to the beach.
- Lunch on Vis. Komiža or Vis town.
- Swim stop and back to Split. Usually a bay on Hvar or Šolta on the way home.
Good to know
- When the sea is rough, the cave can close to visitors. Your skipper checks on the morning and will suggest a plan B if needed.
- Fuel is the big cost on this trip. Ask whether it is included. We always do.
- It is a lot of time on the boat. With small kids, the Blue Lagoon or Pakleni Islands are easier days.
