Rent a boat with a captain in Split

You can rent a boat with a captain in Split, and with one you need no boating licence. On some boats the captain is optional, on others he is mandatory. His fee is the number to check first, because it changes the final price more than anything else.

Rent a boat with a captain in Split: no licence needed, captain fee about 151 euros a day on Click&Boat, and what else to check

Why rent a boat with a captain in Split

With a captain you do not need a boating licence, and you do not need to know the coast. Samboat says that if you have no licence you can choose a boat that comes with a captain. He drives and docks the boat. If you want the licence rules in detail, read how to rent a boat in Split without a licence.

Is the captain mandatory or optional?

It depends on the listing, and the listing says which. On Samboat many sailboats show "captain optional", while a RIB on the same page shows "captain mandatory". Check this line before you fall for a boat.

How much does a captain cost per day?

The sources do not agree, so here are both:

  • Samboat lists an average captain cost of $523.74 a day for Split. It says the fee varies by destination and by owner.
  • Click&Boat shows about €151 a day on average for a skipper in Split.

The two averages cover different boats, so do not compare them one to one. Ask for the captain's fee as its own line, for your boat and your date. On some boats it is already in the price.

What else changes the price

  • Fuel. Some listings leave it out. One Samboat listing says plainly that fuel is not included in the rental price.
  • Dates. Samboat says most catamarans and sailing yachts rent from Saturday to Saturday, so flexible dates can give you more choice.
  • Season. The same page names June to August as the best time, with water at 22 to 26 °C, and May and September as quieter months.

For typical prices by boat type, see typical boat rental prices in Split.

What to ask before you book

  1. Is the captain in the price, and what is his daily fee if not?
  2. Is fuel included, and for how many hours?
  3. Where do we start, and how do we get there? One reviewer on Samboat says a taxi from ACI Marina Split overcharged them, so agree the transfer first.

Which boat to take with a captain

A speedboat covers the islands fastest. A catamaran is steadier for families and bigger groups. A yacht suits a celebration. For a day to Hvar, see Split to Hvar by boat.
